About Dr. Dmitry Gorodnichy

Dr. Dmitry O. Gorodnichy is Senior Research Scientist with the Science and Engineering Directorate of the Canada Border Services Agency, where he leads the recently created Video Surveillance and Biometrics Section. Prior to his employment with the agency, he worked for eight years with National Research Council of Canada, where he established and led the research and development of  Video Recognition Systems.  Among his contributions to Science and Technology there are Nouse® vision-based hands-free technology, which is featured by many media channels worldwide including CNN, ABC, CBC, neuro-computational recognition of faces in video, ACE Surveillance™ (Annotated Critical Evidence) video analytics technology, Associative Neural Network Open Source Library, vision-based robotic arm tracking for the Canadarm, autonomous robot navigation using a single camera, and, more recently, C-BET (Comprehensive Biometric Evolution Toolkit) and VAP/VAT (Video Analytics Platform and Testbed). He holds adjunct professorship with the University of Dalhousie and the Université du Québec (École de Technologie Supérieure). He is the author of over seventy scientific papers, including the invited chapter on "Face recognition evaluation" for the Encyclopedia of Biometrics and two IEEE "Best Presentation" award papers, several patents, and several contributions to Canadian Advisory Committee on ISO Biometrics Standards, and Face Identification Scientific Working Group, of which he is the member. He served as a Chair for IEEE Computational Intelligence Ottawa chapter and a Program Chair for Canadian Conference of Computer and Robot Vision; is the organizer and chair of the first IEEE-published International workshops on Face Processing in Video (2004-5), Video Processing for Security (2006), and Video Processing and Recognition (2007); the editor of Special Issue of Image and Vision Computing journal on Face Processing in Video Sequences (2006). Since 2007,  Dr. Dmitry O. Gorodnichy is the organizer and leader of the Canadian inter-departmental workshops on Video Technology for National Security (VT4NS). He possesses the NRC Outstanding Scientific Achievement Award and the Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Society. In 2004 he was nominated as one of the 21 Leaders of Tomorrow by the Canadian Royal Society Academy of Science's Partnership Group for Science and Engineering.
